New customers registering for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) digital services can now sign-up using GOV.UK One Login.

From today (9 February 2026), individual customers without an existing Government Gateway account will create a GOV.UK One Login using just an email address and password, instead of a 10-12 digit ID, to access HMRC services.

When fully rolled out across government, GOV.UK One Login will be the single way to access all government services online. People will use one secure login for everything from tax to passports to voter registration. With HMRC joining, the number of government services accessible through GOV.UK One Login increases to over 200.

The rollout for HMRC customers will be gradual and closely monitored. HMRC customers with a Government Gateway account do not need to take any action. They will continue to use their current Government Gateway ID and will be contacted when it’s time for them to switch to GOV.UK One Login.

If an existing HMRC customer has a GOV.UK One Login for a different government service (e.g. manage your state pension, or Companies House services) – they will also need to continue to use their Government Gateway for HMRC for now.

Suzanne Newton, HMRC’s Director General for Change Delivery Group, said

Whether filing Self Assessment tax returns online, claiming a tax refund on the HMRC app, or checking PAYE information, GOV.UK One Login will make it simpler and quicker for customers to access government digital services, while maintaining the security and reliability they expect.

New HMRC customers can sign up to GOV.UK One Login from today (9 February), visit GOV.UK to find out more.

The introduction of GOV.UK One Login is one of the ways that the government is transforming and joining up digital public services. By proving their identity once, people can reuse it across government services, saving time whenever they interact with government online.

Further information

Anyone who may need extra assistance with their GOV.UK One Login can contact the Government Digital Service for support.

GOV.UK One Login is currently available for over 200 government services and will gradually expand as more government services are onboarded.
