Oswestry’s Community Cinema

Maona Art in Oswestry is seeking community support to revive and reopen Oswestry’s Community Cinema.

It aims to help get cinema, formerly known as KinoKulture, up and running again as an independently run cinema with a regular programme of film screenings. The cinema, on Arthur Street, will form a focal point for culture, art, leisure, entertainment and media in the town.

The aim is to build a cinema that is rooted in a community, bringing people together to enjoy film and other experiences such as mother and baby clubs, poetry readings, events and activities will help to address isolation and loneliness.

To achieve this ambition, Maona Arts needs financial support and is working to raise funds through Crowdfund Shropshire.

Crowdfund Shropshire is a civic crowdfunding platform delivered by Shropshire Council in partnership with crowdfunding specialists, Spacehive. Other partners include Shropshire VCS Assembly, Community Resource and the Voluntary and Community Support Team, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Energize. The approach matches larger public sector pledges (awards) with local fundraising.

Shropshire Council and its partners have pledged £10,000 to support the cinema project, the maximum grant it could give through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund that funds Crowdfund Shropshire.

To secure the funding, Manoa Arts must also secure £44,000 from the community and the Crowdfund website Revive Oswestrys ONLY community cinema make this easy for anyone to commit money to the scheme safely and securely.

It has already secured support from more than 100 backers pledging more than £28,000.

Cllr Alex Wagner, deputy leader and Cabinet member for communities said:-

“Crowdfund Shropshire helps a wide range of community organisations across Shropshire offers a simple process and platform for communities to share their ideas and projects. Crowdfunding isn’t always easy for volunteers and we urge the community to get behind this and other projects.

“Donations can start at a few pounds– a lot of people giving a small amount will help the project achieve its vision and achieve lasting environmental benefits.”

Cllr Duncan Kerr, whose Oswestry South division includes the cinema site, said:-

“I really value the work Maona Arts is doing to re-open the cinema which has been a fantastic asset for Oswestry. Having this again in the town would be a real boost for Oswestry.

“Any support from individuals or business will be valued, whether through small financial donations, volunteering or in-kind support.”

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) proactively supports delivery of the UK-government’s five national missions: pushing power out to communities everywhere, with a specific focus to help kickstart economic growth and promoting opportunities in all parts of the UK.
