- Former Melbourne Demons star had a prang during show
- Was appearing on SEN WA Breakfast program on Thursday
AFL great David Schwarz has been involved in a car accident while he was giving his footy tips on live radio on Thursday morning.
The Melbourne Demons great was appearing on SEN WA Breakfast with hosts Tim Gossage and Scott Cummings when the program suddenly veered into a very unexpected new direction.
The sound of Schwarz honking his car horn suddenly broke into the broadcast, followed by him saying, ‘Mate, I’ve just – I’ve had an idiot back into me!’
Cummings replied, ‘Are you serious?’
‘Can you believe that? A bloke has just touched me. What a dickh**d!’ Schwarz continued.
‘Anyway, how are we?’

SEN hosts Scott Cummings (left) and Tim Gossage (right) were stunned by the development – before seeing the lighter side
Gossage then asked, ‘Have you just got a parking fine as well?’
Schwarz replied, ‘I’ve just got a parking fine. I pulled out and a bloke has just backed into me, what a goose.’
Gossage and Cummins asked if he needed to take a break from talking to them to exchange details with the other driver, with Schwarz replying, ‘Nah, nah, he’s only just touched me, I’ve got his number plate. I’ll track him down later on.
‘How’s that? I’ve had a great start to the morning. How are you, boys?’
The episode reminded one listener of a very similar incident involving Schwarz, footy legend Kevin Bartlett and radio personality Mark Allen in 2014.
Allen was interviewing Tigers icon Bartlett using hands-free phone technology on SEN’s The Run Home show – which he co-hosted with Schwarz – when he suddenly said, ‘I’ve just crashed, KB. I’ve just crashed my car.’
After cutting the interview short, he called in again to reveal, ‘It was just a little bit of a tap. Everyone’s OK, no one’s hurt. It was a little scary, though.’
Schwarz’s other infamous live-on-air moment came in 2001 when he and controversial Geelong great turned TV star Sam Newman clashed on The Footy Show.

Thursday’s incident wasn’t the first time Schwarz has been involved in a live radio program that got interrupted by a car accident
Newman smashed a cream pie into Schwarz’s face in what was meant to be a joke about the Demons star having a bad game against the Collingwood Magpies a few days beforehand.
Enraged, Schwarz leapt out of his seat and shoved Newman so hard he went flying across the set.
Schwarz later revealed the incident saw his mother give Footy Show host Eddie McGuire a withering spray.
‘When it all happened you go to a commercial break and they clean the pie off, and it was a lemon meringue pie, because I couldn’t see,’ Schwarz said.
‘Sam had hurt his back [when I pushed him] so he’d slipped a disc in his back so he was in trouble, Ed’s gone ballistic because he’s a control freak and [fellow panellists] Chris Tarrant and Spida Everitt are sitting there going what the f**k has just happened.
‘At the end of the show the producer comes out and says Ed, Mary Schwarz is on the phone. My mum worked for Vic Police and being a single mum and what she’s been through, she’s as tough as old desert boots.
‘Apparently the phone call went like this: She said, “Ed, you have no idea who you’ve just f**ked with. You’re from Broadmeadows, we’re from Sunbury, we’re going to punch your f**king head in.’
