Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain that helps
regulate the circadian rhythm, also known as the body’s internal clock.
In many countries, melatonin is available both by prescription
and as an over-the-counter supplement, depending on local regulations. Some
health authorities approve prescription melatonin for children with specific
conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, while adults may use low-dose,
prolonged-release tablets to manage short-term insomnia. However, there has
been a sharp rise in people self-medicating with melatonin, including for their
children, often purchasing it online or as unregulated supplements. These
products may not meet the same quality or safety standards as approved
pharmaceutical preparations.
According to Professor Matthew Walker, an international
expert on sleep “In healthy adults, melatonin supplementation increases total
sleep time by only about 3.9 minutes on average and boosts sleep efficiency by
a mere 2.2%”. It may be more worthwhile to consult with your doctor and
investigate the causes of your sleep problems.
