Health Care, UK Times| Drowning Deaths are Rising Among Older Adults

In 2021, the United Nations declared a World Drowning
Prevention Day was to be held annually on July 25 to highlight the need for
action to prevent drowning with the theme “Anyone can drown, no one should”.

Drowning remains a serious global safety concern, and recent
data from many countries shows that the problem persists. Annual reports and
research continue to highlight where, how and why people lose their lives in
water-related incidents, and the trends are concerning.

Older adults are now among the most at-risk groups. People
aged 65 and over account for a significant proportion of drowning deaths
worldwide. This is often linked to underlying health conditions, reduced
mobility, or incidents such as accidental falls into water. Men also continue
to be overrepresented in drowning statistics across most age groups.

However, the risk is not limited to older adults. Young
people, particularly those aged 15-24, are also vulnerable. Overconfidence,
risk-taking behaviours, and alcohol use all contribute to increased danger
around water. People who are unfamiliar with local water environments,
including visitors or those from different regions, may also face higher risks
due to lower swimming ability or lack of awareness of local hazards.

Location plays a major role. Inland waterways such as
rivers, lakes, and reservoirs account for a large proportion of deaths and can
be unpredictable, with hazards such as strong currents, submerged objects, and
sudden drop-offs. Unlike supervised swimming areas, these locations often lack
safety infrastructure or immediate assistance.

So, what is driving these numbers?

A combination of factors is contributing. Declining swimming
skills in some populations is a growing concern, along with increased
participation in water-based activities among older adults who may have
underlying health conditions. More people are also visiting remote or
unfamiliar locations, where changing conditions, limited supervision, and
isolation can increase risk.

The encouraging part is that drowning is largely
preventable. Strengthening swimming and water safety education is key, along
with targeted awareness campaigns for higher-risk groups. Simple actions can
make a significant difference. Swim with someone, avoid alcohol around water,
wear a lifejacket when boating or fishing, choose supervised swimming areas
where possible, ensure children learn to swim, and always assess conditions
before entering the water.

Water is an important part of life in many parts of the
world, but it demands respect. With increased awareness, preparation, and
education, many of these tragedies can be avoided.
