Harry Maguire has signed a new contract at Manchester United, the club have confirmed.

Maguire has a agreed a new one-year deal with the option for the club to extend it by another 12 months.

Maguire would have been a free agent in the summer, but his representatives have been in talks with the club for some time over a new contract that would lower his £180,000-a-week wages.

‘Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour,’ said Maguire. ‘It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.

‘I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

‘You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.’

The England centre back signed a six-year deal when he moved to Old Trafford from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 for £80million – then a world record for a defender – and the club triggered the option of an extra year last season.

Maguire has been rewarded with a new deal after re-establishing himself as a key player under Michael Carrick and regaining his place in the England squad. The 33-year-old has been United’s senior central defender in the absence of Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez as the club have moved to the brink of Champions League contention under Carrick.

United’s director of football Jason Wilcox said: ‘Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.

‘Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.’

Why United couldn’t afford to lose Maguire – CHRIS WHEELER

After it was confirmed that Casemiro will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, United were known to be concerned over losing too much experience from the squad and were convinced that keeping Maguire was the right option if he was prepared to accept slightly reduced terms.

The agreement makes good sense for both parties. Maguire, who had previously rejected a move to West Ham after United accepted a £30m offer from their Premier League rivals in 2023, also turned down AC Milan and Brendan Rodgers’ new Saudi club Al Qadsiah in January when he was able to speak to foreign clubs.

He was known to be keen to stay in the north-west where his family are settled and extend his career at United. In many ways, Tuesday’s announcement was a victory for the loyalty and perseverance of a player who has always kept his head down and worked hard during a rollercoaster United career in which he also lost the captaincy under Erik ten Hag.

For the club, it was the right move to keep a player who is still at the top of his game and can help mentor young central defensive partners like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.

They now have Maguire under contract for up to two more years, which also means they can focus on strengthening other areas of the team in the summer, notably central midfield and on the left side.
