Golf icon Sir Nick Faldo has revealed that he has undergone open-heart surgery. 

The 68-year-old six-time major winner travelled to Cleveland, Ohio, to see a ‘world-renowned clinic’ for the procedure after learning he was suffering with an enlarged aorta. 

The surgery was ‘successful’, a statement released on Faldo’s social media said, and the Masters champion is now ‘heading home’ along with his wife Lindsay.

A statement read: ‘After two weeks in Cleveland, Nick Faldo, and his wife, Lindsay, are on their way home following a successful, scheduled preventative open-heart surgery to repair his enlarged aorta, performed by world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Lars Svensson at The Cleveland Clinic.

‘Nick is now looking ahead to returning to his golf course design work and to the Masters Week in Augusta, GA, where he will be celebrating ‘Six back in ’96’.

‘Home never felt so good.’

Faldo is still expected to attend the Masters when the prestigious tournament gets underway in April.

The Englishman is renowned as one of the best British golfers ever having won an incredible 43 tournaments during a career spanning more than two decades.

His major victories came at Augusta in 1989, 1990 and 1996, as well as the Open Championship three times in 1987, 1990 and 1992. 

In retirement he has regularly appeared as a pundit on television, particularly with Sky Sports. 

Faldo was also a broadcaster for American channel CBS, but stepped away from the role in 2022.
