The role of Ginny Weasley in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series will be recast after season one.
Young actor Gracie Cochrane will star as the youngest Weasley in the debut season of the TV adaptation, premiering this Christmas. However, she will hand the reins to another actor for season two and beyond.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” the actor’s family said in a statement, per Deadline. “Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
HBO addressed the news in a following statement. “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show,” the streamer said. “We wish Gracie and her family the best.”
Cochrane’s casting was initially revealed in August 2025. “The Burrow is nearly full,” HBO wrote on Instagram at the time, sharing a selfie of previously announced Ron actor Alastair Stout and the other Weasley actors.

Alongside Cochrane, Tristan and Gabriel Harland will play the mischievous Weasley twins Fred and George, while Ruari Spooner will play the third Weasley, Percy. The actor starring as the eldest Weasley sibling, Bill, portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson in the films, has yet to be announced.
Ginny, the only daughter of pure-blood wizards Arthur and Molly Weasley, was originally played by Bonnie Wright in the beloved eight-film series based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling book series.
Up until book five, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ginny is of minor importance to the storyline.
The TV series was officially renewed for a second season earlier this month, with production expected to begin sometime this fall.

Each season of the show will be based on one of Rowling’s seven books. The series is expected to run for a decade.
Last month, the first trailer for the show was released, offering a glimpse of Harry’s journey from living under the stairs to discovering a new world as the Boy Who Lived. The two-minute clip became the most-watched HBO trailer in history, racking up more than 277 million organic views across platforms in its first 48 hours online.
Season one, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone after the first book in the series, will premiere Christmas Day on HBO Max.
