  • Towering forward is facing likely suspension

NSW Waratahs enforcer Miles Amatosero could be suspended by Rugby Australia after fracturing the eye-socket of teammate Angus Scott-Young following a wild fight at training.

Amatosero, 23, responded with a flurry of punches after off-season recruit Scott-Young reacted to a tackle from the 125kg lock during a recent live game simulation at the Super Rugby club’s headquarters at Daceyville in Sydney.

According to Fairfax, a fired-up Scott-Young verbally sprayed Amatosero, who then punched the loose forward twice.

It is understood Amatosero apologised to Scott-Young after the training session, and there was initially no action taken by the Waratahs – but Rugby Australia is now tipped to intervene.

Scott-Young, who joined NSW from Northampton Saints, is expected to miss the Waratahs’ season-opening clash against the Queensland Reds on February 13 due to his eye injury.

RA and the Waratahs are still to decide if Amatosero is guilty of a code of conduct breach.

Rugby Australia high-performance boss Peter Horne has interviewed Amatosero and Scott-Young for their version of events, and also viewed footage of the incident.

The towering lock could be sidelined for upcoming trial games against the Reds on January 31 and the Brumbies on February 5.

‘The NSW Waratahs and Rugby Australia are aware of an incident that occurred recently during a Waratahs pre-season training session and are reviewing the matter,’ an RA statement read.

It comes as the Waratahs look to move on from a frustrating 2025 campaign, where they finished 8th.

Amatosero grew up in Sydney and attended Waverley College.

He then joined leading French club Clermont aged 18 before linking up with the Waratahs in 2024.

NSW coach Dan McKellar wants to see Amatosero realise his considerable potential.

‘We’ve certainly seen development within him,’ he said.

‘I believe if he gets it right and values what’s important in his position, he has the ability to play at the highest level.’
