Funding for climate innovation

The Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) is inviting applications for its ‘Future Proofing Our Climate and Weather’ opportunity seeds. The funding supports early-stage research to explore new ways to respond to climate risks and build resilience.

Projects can range from curiosity-driven ideas to more advanced, translational research. Successful projects can receive up to £500,000.

What ARIA is looking for

ARIA is interested in proposals that explore new approaches to climate adaptation and intervention. This includes

  • carbon dioxide removal, including new methods to reduce atmospheric carbon
  • extreme weather forecasting, to improve prediction and preparedness
  • new ideas related to solar geoengineering (excluding approaches focused on altering planetary temperature, which are covered by a separate programme)

Projects should address gaps where current mitigation efforts are not keeping pace with environmental change.

ARIA welcomes proposals from across the R&D ecosystem, including individuals (including those not affiliated with an organisation), universities (including proposals from students, postdocs and staff), research institutions, small, medium and large companies, charities and public sector research organisations.

The deadline for applications is 2pm on 31 July 2026.

Supporting documents, including the full call for proposals and guidance, are available on the ARIA website.
