A West Australian footy fan has revealed a staffer at Perth’s Optus Stadium stopped him from drinking his beer at an AFL match because it ‘had too much beer in it’ – and other supporters have had the same problem.

A footy supporter named Phil called in to radio station 6PR earlier this week to outline his bewildering experience at the $1.6billion venue on the banks of the Swan River – with other fans backing up his version of events.

Phil told the station he was left ‘perplexed’ after a staff member who was ‘almost hysterical’ chased him down and stopped him from drinking the beer he’d just been poured.

The reason? The staffer told him ‘That beer’s got too much beer in it’ because they believed it had been filled above a line on the cup that indicates how much it should be filled.

Phil said the staffer poured the beer out, then refilled the cup to the line.

Last Saturday’s Fremantle vs Demons match marked the first time the stadium has made full-strength beer available to fans in general public areas of the ground.

It was also the first time beers had been served in recyclable plastic cups, which replaced the paper cups that had been used previously.

Phil’s experience – which could also have occurred at last Sunday’s Eagles vs Kangaroos clash – indicates there could be a few teething problems with the new policy.

Other footy fans went online to say Phil wasn’t alone in getting busted by the beer police.

‘I witnessed the same thing,’ one wrote on Instagram.

‘I was at the game on the weekend and this was definitely happening,’ added another.

‘Yes they were knocking off the top of the pour to get below the line quite a number of times,’ a third commented.

‘Can confirm mine was poured out 3 times because they went 2mm over the fill line, I waited about 15mins for them to get it right,’ another wrote.

‘Yep they did it with my beers too. They were told off by the bosses in RED…..that’s what the line is there for. So when they went over, they tipped it into the tray,’ another angry fan said.

Other commenters were left stunned at what they saw as the ‘nanny state’ infiltrating the footy.

‘No no don’t drink that full strength full cup of beer you’ll be too happy,’ one wrote.

‘So they wasted an entire cup because they were worried about a couple of mls over? … My God this city has some absolute donkeys working in hospitality these days!’ said another.

‘Is there anything about the footy that isn’t soft?’ one asked.

Other comments included ‘Get a load of this woke nonsense’, ‘How miserable do you have to be’ and ‘The absolute state of this country!’
