French flanker Oscar Jegou has been cited for alleged contact with the eye area of Scotland’s Ewan Ashman during Saturday’s Six Nations match at Murrayfield.

He faces a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday for a foul play charge from a maul in France’s 50-40 loss.

The incident, which sees Jegou’s right hand make contact with Ashman’s face, was missed by the match officials at the time and was not brought to the attention of referee Angus Gardner by the TMO.

Former international referee Nigel Owens told the BBC: “It definitely should have been looked at. It doesn’t look good to be honest. Looking at that footage, that player is going to be in a bit of trouble.”

Law 9.12 states: “a player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes contact with the eye or eye area.” Eye-gouging carries a ban from four weeks to four years.

France host England in Paris on Saturday, looking to retain the Six Nations title, despite their Grand Slam hopes going up in smoke on Saturday.

They remain in pole position to top the table after scoring a series of late tries at Murrayfield to keep ahead of Scotland on points difference.

However, Scotland are primed to pounce on any slip-up from France. Gregor Townsend’s men have won their last three matches against England, Wales and France after losing their opening game to Italy.

They will face Ireland in Dublin on Saturday afternoon, aiming to put the pressure on France ahead of their match later that day against England.

Ireland are also still in the mix for the Six Nations title, but are currently two points behind France and Scotland in the table.

Andy Farrell’s side are also on a three-game winning run after securing victories over Italy, England and Wales following a humbling defeat by France.
