Police say a major incident was declared following the multi-vehicle crash on the A55

Four people have been taken to hospital and a major incident declared following a multi-vehicle crash in north Wales.

Police were called to the scene on the A55 near Pentre Halkyn, Flintshire, at 15:21 BST on Saturday after a lorry travelling in the eastbound carriageway collided with two westbound vehicles.

One person with serious injuries was airlifted, and another taken by road, to hospital in Stoke-on-Trent. Two people were also taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital in Rhyl, Denbighshire, by ambulance.

The lorry driver – a 58-year-old man – was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.

The road remained closed in both directions for several hours while North Wales Police officers from the forensic collision investigation unit carried out their initial investigation.

One lane in both directions of the A55 re-opened shortly before midnight and a 40mph speed restriction is now in place.

Sgt Danielle Ashley of the roads crime unit said the force was appealing for witnesses to come forward.
