Former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos sees audacious Panenka penalty SAVED for Monterrey as his side suffer humiliating defeat

Sergio Ramos was left with egg on his face on Thursday as he saw his ambitious Panenka penalty saved during Monterrey’s humiliating defeat at the hands of Toluca in Liga MX.

The defender was known for his excellent penalty-taking skills during his time at both Real Madrid and Spain, scoring a combined 30 for Los Blancos and the national team.

Since moving to Mexico in February, the 39-year-old has taken on the mantle of taking Monterrey’s spot-kicks, and he had a perfect record – netting three penalties from three – prior to their clash with Toluca.

But that came to an end in humbling fashion when he stepped up to the spot in the 20th minute, looking to give his side a two-goal lead at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Ramos attempted to catch goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez out by stuttering before dinking the ball down the middle of the goal.

But Gonzalez did not fall for Ramos’ tricks as he stood tall and easily collected the ball before launching a counter-attack, leaving the centre-back red-faced.

It’s fair to say, fans didn’t sympathise with Ramos’ misfortune, with one Reddit user writing: ‘I find it incredibly satisfying whenever I see a Panenka saved.’

Another took it as an opportunity to land a sarcastic dig at the defender’s character. ‘Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy,’ they wrote.

Ramos’ miss proved costly as Toluca turned the game on its head soon after, eventually hammering Monterrey 6-2 come the end of the 90 minutes.

The Spaniard was not the only big name present on the losing side, with Anthony Martial also in action for Monterrey on the night.

Martial, 29, joined the club earlier this month following a disappointing one-year stint at AEK Athens. He only featured 24 times for the Greek side after leaving Manchester United last summer.

The Frenchman was given 51 minutes, but failed to leave a lasting impression, failing to even register an attempt on goal.
