  • Chevy Stewart faced Sutherland Local Court on Thursday

Footy star Chevy Stewart has fronted court after causing $5000 worth of damage in a gaming room at a popular Sydney pub.

The Canberra Raiders fullback, 20, was at Northies Cronulla Hotel on September 26 last year when he poured beer on a poker machine out of frustration.

A few minutes later, the entire room was engulfed in darkness, with Stewart’s reckless conduct resulting in all the other pokies briefly not working.

In Sutherland Local Court on Thursday, Magistrate Jillian Kiely said Stewart reacted in an ‘immature’ fashion after losing his money – but noted the young gun immediately offered to pay for the damage when speaking with security.

Following the incident, police were called and Stewart was asked to leave the hotel, which he did.

During his sentencing, Kiely also recognised Stewart paid Northies compensation for the damage he caused.

Stewart managed to avoid a conviction, but must abide by a conditional release order until January 21 next year.

It follows a frustrating 2025 for the fullback as he featured in just one NRL game for the minor premiers.

He was reportedly given permission to speak to rival clubs, but no contract offers followed, despite reported interest from the Sharks and Dragons.

Kaeo Weekes and off-season recruit Daine Laurie will be the likely first-choice No.1s for Canberra this season.

Stewart is contracted with the Raiders until the end of 2026 – with an option for the following year.

He attended Endeavour Sports High in Sutherland and was a standout in the juniors for Cronulla before linking up with Canberra in 2022.

Head coach Ricky Stuart convinced the youngster to join the club, but now his future in the nation’s capital appears to be clouded.

It is understood Canberra will also consider whether any further punishment is necessary for Stewart following his court appearance.
