Brisbane Broncos great Alex Glenn has been forced to defend himself on social media after he liked a controversial post by Fox League that appeared to criticise the team’s head coach, Michael Maguire.

The post made reference to comments by former Penrith player Mark Geyer, who had questioned Maguire’s coaching methods.

The premiership-winning coach, who is affectionately nicknamed ‘Madge’, is known for being a taskmaster and a hard-nosed man manager.

Speaking on 2GB’s The Continuous Call Team show, Geyer claimed that this reputation was becoming problematic for the former New South Wales coach, stating: ‘What I do keep hearing a lot is Madge’s name being mentioned… I’m not gonna say [in] unfriendly [ways], but not in positive ways.’

‘That makes me think that someone like Michael Maguire has a shelf life as a coach in the NRL of around three years, because he is so intense,’ Geyer added.

The first part of the quote was published on Fox League’s Instagram account with a picture of Maguire during a press conference.

A caption on the image read: ‘Pressure is beginning to build around Broncos coach Michael Maguire. Will we see Brisbane go back-to-back this year?’

Glenn, who made 288 appearances for the Broncos during his glittering footy career, currently works for the Broncos as a matchday host.

The former New Zealand star recently led a tour of Brisbane Broncos fans to England for the side’s recent World Club Challenge match against Hull KR.

The 37-year-old denied he had supported the criticism of the Broncos boss, insisting that he backed Maguire to the hilt.

‘Any suggestion that I was expressing negativity towards Madge is an absolute joke and completely unfounded,’ Glenn said in a statement via the Broncos.

He clarified why he had liked the post, stating he was only supporting the caption.

‘I am a massive advocate for Madge and only liked the post because it asked the specific question, “Will we see Brisbane go back-to-back this year?”

‘I liked the post only to affirm my support on that specific point.

‘All our fans know that no one cheers harder for Madge and the Broncos than I do.’

After taking over from Kevin Walters in 2024, Maguire coached the Broncos to success in his first season in charge, snapping the club’s 19-year wait for a premiership.

Brisbane get their 2026 title defence underway this year with a tough opening round clash against the Penrith Panthers, a repeat of last year’s NRL preliminary final.

Glenn doubled down on his comments on Instagram, hitting out at those who had tried to create a divide between him and the footy club.

‘If you’re getting so wound up about all this little stuff and trying to create a divide around myself and the club, you’re looking in the wrong space,’ Glenn said in a video published on his Instagram account on Tuesday.

‘Everyone knows I support Madge and have always loved that he was coming to this club because hard work always beats talent.

‘What I mean by that, is if you’re having a cry or whinge about getting trained too hard, which is not the players complaining, it’s all the media outlets trying to create a story.’

Glenn, who retired in 2021, added: ‘If you’re whinging about training too hard in the professional realm, then you’re in the wrong industry, clearly.

Glenn insisted that he had only been reacting to the caption and had issued his approval at the view that the Broncos were going to defend their NRL title in 2026

‘For me, there’s no complaining about hard work.

‘You’ve got to train your arse off in order to be champions and the boys were proving that last year, they were 2025 champions for a reason.

‘They came out and dominated the competition.

‘Don’t go out trying to create a divide between the club and me, between Madge and me, because it ain’t going to work. I support him through and through.’
