A football player in Australia has been injured after a fence gave way during a crowd surge as his team celebrated on the sidelines.

Melbourne Knights star Darcy Anastovski had to be subbed off when the incident happened in the club’s match against rivals FC Melbourne Srbija.

Former Melbourne United midfielder Luka Kolic scored the opening goal of the match, with his side rushing to the sidelines to celebrate with supporters.

But as hundreds of Knights fans clamoured to be as close as possible to the players, the fence collapsed, landing on Anastovski.

‘Apparently quite a serious knee injury,’ one fan commented on social media platform X.

‘Poor guy did his ACL I heard,’ added another.

‘Hope the young lad is ok, chaotic scenes.’ another replied.

Knights fans also posted that the incident was not isolated.

‘That fence is always breaking,’ one posted on X.

The Knights need to something about the fence on Quarry Hill,’ another posted on Facebook.

‘That is the second time it has collapsed due to a surge of fans. This time a player had his knee injured.’

The club replied to that comment, stating: ‘The fence was being repaired and fixed today’.

Daily Mail has contacted the Melbourne Knights for comment.

The club thanked its supporters for their passion on social media.

‘At Tompsett Stadium – the home of the Knights fortress – the passion, the people and the community were on full display, with everyone lifting the club back to where it belongs. We brought back the Melbourne Knights of old!’ the club posted.

‘Seeing so many faces – regular and new, young and old – filling the stands and supporting our boys was a night we’ll replay in our heads over and over again.’

The post also thanked volunteers and concluded by saying ‘P.s get back quickly, Darcy’.

The Melbourne Knights are an historic Australian soccer club based in Sunshine North, Melbourne, founded in 1953 by Croatian immigrants and still strongly linked to the Croatian Australian community.

They are one of Australia’s most successful former National Soccer League clubs, winning two NSL championships and four premierships, while also producing major players including Mark Viduka.

The club now plays at Knights Stadium and, after finishing last in NPL Victoria in 2025, competes in Victorian Premier League 1.
