Queensland great Dale Shearer has impressed his followers on social media by showcasing his incredible workout regime.

The former Queensland flyer, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest outside backs in NRL history, published several snaps of himself spinning on his workout bike, working hard on the rowing machine and lifting a fair bit of tin.

Interestingly, the Queensland-born star, 60, also left some of his Facebook followers aghast as he donned a Port Adelaide AFL jumper while he was in the gym.

‘S*** shirt you got on there Rowdy,’ one of his followers teased.

The former footy star, who made 26 appearances for the Maroons and won 20 caps for the Kangaroos, looked in great shape as he smashed his way through an intense workout that included two hours of cardio and an extensive weights session.

‘Off to a flying start,’ he wrote on Facebook.

‘Forty-five minutes of light weights, high reps. An hour on the bike. Half an hour on the rower. Four hundred crunches in the steam.’

After revealing his insane workout plan, he delivered an inspiring message to others looking to get into shape, while also stating that this was a message for himself to keep working on his fitness.

‘Dragged out as not enjoying like I used to,’ Shearer said.

‘[I’ve] put it on here to motivate myself as no turning back now. Don’t want to be a quitter.

During his distinguished footy career, Shearer, who is affectionately known as ‘Rowdy’, played for multiple teams around the NRL, including Manly, Brisbane, Gold Coast Seagulls, South Queensland Crushers, the Cowboys and the Roosters.

He also featured in 26 State of Origin appearances for the Maroons and was capped 20 times for the Kangaroos.

Earlier this year, Shearer, who also enjoyed a short spell in England with Widnes during the 1987-88 season, explained that his footy career may not have even come about had it not been for his late wife, Delyse.

Speaking during an interview with ABC NRL Daily, the 60-year-old was asked whether he felt as if he had lived a full life on and off the pitch.

‘Ah, most definitely, there’s been highs and lows,’ Shearer said on the podcast.

‘Most people know I lost my wife to cancer. She was only 39 and we’d been going out since school.

‘She was the one that actually… if she wasn’t in the car with me, I wouldn’t have ended up at Manly,’ he explained, speaking on his trip to join the Sea Eagles from Mackay, back in 1985.

‘I was happy to turn around and play for places in the bush,’ he added.

‘We were on our way down and we pulled over, about 20 mins down the road. I’ve always been a little family boy and lived in the bush.

‘And I said: “I don’t think I’m going to handle this big smoke. She said: “We’re packed, we’re going, we’re going,” and after that 10 minutes, we soldiered on.’

He added: ‘If she wasn’t in that car with me I wouldn’t have got there at that time… On that particular day, I wasn’t keen on going to the big smoke.’

Shearer admitted that he settled into life at Manly pretty quickly, adding that one of his greatest attributes, perhaps, was his brilliant fitness.

‘I’ve always been fit. People called me a closet trainer. I think that’s a huge secret to my success. Squash was a key thing, I loved playing squash,’ he said.

He explained that he didn’t feel fit enough when he arrived at Manly so he went on a 31-day training programme, doing shuttle runs and long-distance runs, and went on to change his fitness around.
