AFL legend Jonathan Brown has lifted the lid on how much he went through after being blindsided by the news he had a brain tumour.

The three-time premiership winner was forced to undergo surgery recently to remove a non-cancerous mass.

Brown, 44, detailed his harrowing experience and pinpointed the moment he knew he would be fine after having the procedure done.

‘The TV was on in my room, and I saw my beautiful wife Kylie there. I could remember her name, so that was a good start,’ Brown told Fox Sports.

‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, or Hot Seat, whatever it’s called (was on). I got them correct up to the $8000 question and I thought, “Jeez I’m going alright”.’

The treacherous journey began for Brown, after the love of his life urged him into completing a basic health check-up.

‘I have so much to be grateful for, starting with Kyles. She’s the one that nagged me into it (being tested),’ Brown said.

‘She’s got her hashtag now, #naggingwivessavelives.’

The 44-year-old has been forced to live a different life post-surgery.

Brown has explained there are now restrictions on the sort of everyday activities he’s able to safely engage in.

‘I’m not allowed to drive (a car). I’m not allowed to drive the boat out the back. Not allowed to go for a swim,’ Brown said.

The 256-game Lions icon even chose a fake name when he was admitted to hospital to have the procedure done.

Jonathan Brown went under the identity of Peter John Sutherland during his hospital stay.

His wife chose the name Britney Sutherland when she was listed as his next of kin, in honour of her favourite singer, pop star Britney Spears.

Brown was a part of the legendary Brisbane Lions team which won three consecutive premierships from 2001 to 2003.

He was club captain across four seasons from 2009 to 2012.

The Lions icon was also given the honour of presenting the 2025 team with the premiership trophy after their victory in the 2025 AFL decider.

He has become a leading member of Fox Sports’ footy coverage since joining the broadcaster in 2015.
