The Sorrento Sharks Football Club has paid a heartbreaking tribute to talented player Scott Cameron after his tragic death on Monday morning.

Cameron has been remembered as a champion of the team who starred in 200 games for the Sharks and played a role in the side winning five premierships.

More importantly, he’s been hailed as a ‘once-in-a-lifetime personality’.

‘It is with incredible sorrow and devastation that the Sorrento Football Netball Club shares the passing of Scott Cameron, who passed away early this morning,’ the club said in a statement online.

‘There is comfort in knowing that Scott was surrounded by those who loved him most in his final moments.

‘To Scott’s family – Denise, Mark, Heath, Sue, and his three beautiful children Cooper, Willow and Harriett – our hearts are completely with you.

‘The entire Sorrento Football Netball Club community sends its love, strength and deepest condolences. Please keep Scott’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

‘Scott was a once-in-a-lifetime personality. A much-loved teammate, friend, family man, Shark and Life Member of the Sorrento Football Netball Club, he leaves behind a legacy that will live on forever.

‘Across a remarkable career with the Sharks, Scott played 200 games between 2001 and 2012, was a five-time premiership player in 2004, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012, a multiple best and fairest winner, including the 2009 Best and Fairest, and was also recognised as the MPNFL [Mornington Peninsula Football Netball League] Best and Fairest in the 2001 Nepean Division thirds.

‘The past two weeks have been incredibly difficult for Scott’s family, who are understandably devastated.

‘The many messages, phone calls, texts and acts of support have provided great strength during this time, and that love and care will never be forgotten.’

News of Cameron’s passing drew emotional tributes from family, friends and followers of the club.

‘Heart broken. My beautiful dad now gone!’ wrote Cameron’s daughter Willow.

‘The best ruckman we have ever seen,’ a commenter said.

‘Very very sorry to hear this, I loved our battles on the field, but enjoyed our post match beers and banter even more. A larger than life character that was a huge part of the sorras dominance. RIP big fella and thoughts are with the Cameron family and his teammates,’ wrote a third.

Other mourners called Cameron the ‘mayor of Sorrento’ and ‘a funny bugger who said it as you saw it’.

The Sorrento club will share details of Cameron’s funeral once they’re confirmed.
