- Arsenal crashed out of the EFL Cup as they lost 4-0 on aggregate to Newcastle
- Fans were quick to poke fun at the Gunners on social media after their defeat
Football fans mocked Arsenal after they crashed out of the Carabao Cup semi-final to Newcastle by virtue of a 4-0 aggregate defeat.
The Gunners, who were already 2-0 down from last month’s first leg, struggled all night at St James’ Park and were beaten by the same scoreline thanks to goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon.
Arsenal came into the clash fresh off a stunning 5-1 victory against Man City in the Premier League on Sunday, after which Gunners players and fans pointed fun at their rivals.
During the side’s previous encounter in September – which was a feisty 2-2 draw – City striker Erling Haaland had clashed with his opponents after full-time and told them to ‘stay humble’.
Supporters at the Emirates made sure to lap that up following their victory on Sunday, with signs displaying the message, while the 24-year-old received a hostile reception throughout the clash.
In fact, Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was involved in an altercation with Haaland following the initial game, mimicked the Norwegian’s meditation celebration when he scored.
Elsewhere, Gabriel chose to celebrate in his face when the Gunners went 1-0 up – and the ‘stay humble’ comment generated significant airtime, with Kendrick Lamar’s hit ‘Humble’ played out at the Emirates Stadium.
But things turned around quickly with the Newcastle defeat, and following the game, fans revelled in the setback for Mikel Arteta’s side.
One said: ‘Stay Humble,’ with a photo of former Gunners star Thierry Henry, while another added: ‘Stay humble Arsenal fans,’, while posting a photo of Haaland celebrating a goal.
Meanwhile, another chimed in with: ‘Arsenal fans when they lose 4-0 on aggregate and go trophyless for the fifth season in a row but they beat City at the Emirates and told Haaland to “stay humble”.’
A further fan said: ‘ANTONY GORDON MAKES IT 2-0 FOR NEWCASTLE AGAINST ARSENAL. THEY AREN’T WINNING A TROPHY, STAY HUMBLE EH.’
Other fans were quick to chime in their comments, relishing Arsenal’s defeat as they said ‘Stay Humble eh Arteta and Arsenal, pure bottle jobs Haaland really said the truth LMAO.’
An extra supporter added: ‘If you’re going to dish it out… You better be able to take it. Stay humble. What a performance and housery from Newcastle. A joy to watch.’
Meanwhile, a final fan said: ‘This is the exact reason why Arsenal were told to “stay humble”. Give it loads after beating Manchester City and then bottle the big game after it. Up the toon.’
After the game, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, who shone during the clash, aimed a thinly-veiled dig at the Gunners when discussing the victory.
‘It feels amazing,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘A proper team performance and we got the win. Our fans are never in question, they make it so difficult for the opposition and we did it the right way.
‘We had a game plan we thought would work. Everyone knows we press. It is important for us to stay humble now. It will be a big occasion but it’s so far away.’
