Fans took to social media to deride Robbie Savage for his comments on Mason Mount after the former Chelsea midfielder starred in Manchester United’s victory over Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

United entered their clash with Athletic Bilbao full of confidence after recording a 3-0 victory when they travelled to the San Mames in the first leg.

However, the Basque side threatened to upset the odds when Mikel Jaureguizar gave the visitors the lead on the night with a wonderful goal on 31 minutes.

A triple substitution for United after the hour mark saw Amorim introduce Amad Diallo, Luke Shaw and Mount, and the latter wasted little time making an impact on proceedings.

After a deft piece of skill Mount proceeded to net a stunning strike that saw United move to 4-1 on aggregate at Old Trafford, before goals from Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund put the result beyond doubt.

Mount then added a second in injury time to complete the victory, though after the game much attention was focused on a bizarre remark made on commentary by Robbie Savage on commentary.

Speaking on TNT Sports the former Leicester and Wales midfielder called Mount’s performance, ‘the best 30 minutes of his career.’

He added: ‘What a performance from Mason Mount! What a substitution. They were struggling there but Mount scored two world-class goals.’

Despite his effusive praise for the 26-year-old, fans on social media were quick to deride Savage for a particular comment regarding the Champions League winner.

One wrote: ‘Is this Robbie Savage’s first time watching Mason Mount, or? “Best 30 mins of his career” is a shameless comment.’

Another agreed: ‘Robbie Savage seemingly forgetting that Mason Mount assisted a Champions League winning goal here.’

A third fan added: ‘Mason Mount 2021 – Wins the Champions League and wins Chelsea Player of the Year.

Mount enjoyed an 18-year spell at Chelsea after graduating from the club’s youth academy to make his first team debut in 2017.

During his time at Stamford Bridge the England international made nearly 200 appearances in all competitions, scoring 33 goals.

In the summer of 2023 then-United boss Erik ten Hag spent £55million to bring Mount to Manchester, but a slew of injuries have seen him spend much of his time at the club on the sidelines.

‘I carried on going, working hard in training every day and tried to stay positive and when I had an opportunity to try to make an impact,” Mount told TNT Sports post-match on Thursday.

‘Today it paid off and I came on and affected the game. It was a tight game when I came on, I just tried to calm it down.’
