  • Bunnies great at centre of wild scenes in March

South Sydney Rabbitohs great Alex Johnston has become the first signing for the Papua New Guinea Chiefs, marking the second time he has made Aussie rugby league history in a matter of weeks.

The try-scoring machine will link up with the NRL’s newest side when it enters the competition in 2028.

Johnston confirmed the groundbreaking move when he reposted the news on Instagram on Tuesday along with the caption ‘Yessssss sirrrrr’.

The 31-year-old – who has represented PNG 12 times – first made footy history on March 13 as he became the NRL’s greatest ever try scorer, with all 219 of his four pointers coming for the Bunnies.

After being honoured with a statue in front of Rabbitohs headquarters in the days following the moment, he opened up about what could come next.

‘It’d be cool to be the first signature over there (for the Chiefs), but I bleed red and green. I’ve still got this year and next year at the club,’ Johnston said.

‘If I’m still kicking and still got some miles on these legs, I’ll go from there and see where I end up.

‘They just love rugby league so much over there, the Chiefs, every week they’ll get massive support.

‘It’s something I probably want to be a part of.’

Johnston has played 250 games for the Rabbitohs, and was a part of their last premiership-winning team back in 2014.

The 31-year-old also announced his engagement to long-time partner Taryn in a heartwarming post on Instagram last month.
