Fire crews were called to the blaze in Kirkintilloch on Friday night

A large fire has gutted a former additional needs school in East Dunbartonshire, with crews still attempting to extinguish the flames.

Nine fire engines and specialist resources were called to Campsie View School on Boghead Road in Kirkintilloch at about 22:40 on Friday.

A number of a nearby properties were evacuated and there are no reported casualties.

Local residents have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed and some nearby roads have been cordoned off.

Police have closed Spruce Drive, Heather Drive, Heather Place and Boghead Road.

East Dunbartonshire Council said they are expected to remain closed over the weekend and diversion signs are in place.

The school and nursery at Campsie View catered to children and young people with additional support needs and had about 100 pupils at a time.

It was absorbed into the new Woodland View Primary School in August 2023.
