Farcical scenes in the Championship as Blackburn vs Ipswich is called off with just 11 MINUTES remaining – and match may have to be replayed despite Rovers leading against 10 men

Blackburn Rovers are nervously waiting to find out if they have three points after their match with Ipswich Town was suspended despite them leading.

The Lancashire side were 1-0 up with 11 minutes left after Todd Cantwell’s penalty had put them in front and Ipswich’s Jacob Greaves was sent off.

But the game was called off due to the heavy rain, with staff unable to recover the pitch to a playable state.

Blackburn now await the decision of the EFL Committee to see if they earn three points or have to re-play the clash.

It would have been a good win for Valerien Ismael’s side, who are sat 18th in the Championship.

And beating one of the sides relegated from the Premier League would have been an impressive way to earn a first home win of the season, despite the Tractor Boys’ own struggles so far.

The decision to suspend the game was taken in agreement with both Ismael and Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna.

Supporters had to wait for around 25 minutes to see if the game would resume but eventually the decision was taken to end it.

‘Due to a waterlogged pitch, the referee has called off the contest,” Blackburn wrote on X.

‘A decision on whether the fixture will be replayed in full will be made by the EFL Board in due course.’

For abandoned games, the EFL rulebook states: ‘All League Matches shall be of 90 (ninety) minutes’ duration.

‘But any league match which from any cause whatever falls short of 90 minutes’ duration may be ordered to count as a completed fixture or be replayed in full or in part on whatever terms and conditions the board shall in their absolute discretion determine and shall be played in compliance with these regulations and the Football Association Rules respectively and under the Laws of the Game as approved by the International Football Association Board.

‘In the event of conflict between any such Rules, Regulations and Laws as aforesaid, the Football Association Rules shall prevail.’
