News, Greater Manchester

A police car is parked on the pavement alongside an iron fence.

Police were called to Sheepridge Road in Huddersfield just after 23:30 BST on 11 August

The family of a 13-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in a flat have said they are “absolutely devastated” by her “totally unexpected” death.

Casey-Louise Horrocks, originally from Tameside, Greater Manchester, was discovered by emergency services in Huddersfield on 11 August and died later in hospital.

In a tribute her family said: “Goodnight princess. I love you and miss you lots. Forever 13.”

A 16-year-old boy who was arrested on suspicion of murder and rape following her death has been released on conditional bail, West Yorkshire Police said.

“Suddenly and totally unexpected, on Tuesday 12th August our beautiful Casey-Louise gained her angel wings,” the tribute on social media said.

“Our family is absolutely devastated by this news.”

The tribute asked people to respect their privacy and “give us time to grieve as a family”.

West Yorkshire Police said Casey-Louise had been living in Liverpool.

‘Unexplained’

The force was called by the ambulance service to reports of a girl found unresponsive in a flat on Sheepridge Road, Huddersfield, on the evening of 11 August.

She was taken to hospital where she died in the early hours of the following day.

A post-mortem examination concluded her death was unexplained pending further investigation.

A police spokesperson said the arrested boy, from Huddersfield, had also been arrested and released on conditional bail in relation to the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl in a separate incident in Kirklees.

Both incidents remain under investigation.

“Detectives are working to fully understand the circumstances of the girl’s death which is being treated as unexplained after a post mortem could not establish how she died,” the spokesperson added.
