The Football Association has joined the police in looking into claims Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri spat at Leeds United fans during Saturday’s match at Turf Moor.

A fan in the away end made the allegation following the 2-0 victory for the home side in Lancashire.

Over the weekend, police confirmed that they were investigating the incident, and Daily Mail Sport understands that the FA has now launched its own review.

Mejbri, who came through the ranks at Manchester Unted, came on after 83 minutes and was booked in added time.

Last season, the 22-year-old Tunisia international appeared to taunt Leeds supporters when he was substituted during Burnley’s 1-0 Championship win at Elland Road, raising his arms aloft as he made his way behind the goal and to the dugouts.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: ‘Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor. We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.’

The FA often reviews events surrounding matches before deciding whether to launch a formal investigation and, while they declined to comment, it is thought they are currently in the initial stage.

Burnley declined to comment.
