Steven Gerrard has added further fuel to speculation that he could be set to return to Rangers after professing his love for the club while enjoying a night out.

The former midfielder, who led the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, emphatically stated his affection for the club when asked by a Celtic supporter to record a message.

A deal to purchase the Glasgow giants by 49ers Enterprises – who also own Leeds United – is close, leading to rampant speculation that a marquee managerial appointment could follow.

Gerrard left the club for Aston Villa just six months after leading them to the Scottish title. His stint in the Premier League proved unsuccessful. He has been without a club since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq in January.

In the clip that has been widely circulated on social media, the 44-year-old can be seen replying to the Celtic fan: Listen Debbie, this f***ing mushroom is a Celtic fan.

‘We f***ing love Rangers. F*** Debbie I love Rangers.’

In another video, Gerrard can be seen, shouting: ‘Up the Teddy Bears’ after being filmed by another supporter attempting ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, a song that is synonymous with Celtic and Liverpool.

It comes as Rangers’ American takeover took a significant step towards completion when some of the main figures involved embarked on a tour of Ibrox this week.

The Americans hope to have a deal wrapped up by June in order to minimise any disruption to the start of the next campaign.

But the plans for season 2025-26 are already well under way. New sporting director Kevin Thelwell was also in Glasgow this week and took the time to chat with interim boss Barry Ferguson.

A statement read: ‘Rangers and its existing controlling shareholders are in productive conversations with the two lead members of the consortium, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group, about the potential for the consortium to acquire control of the club and to inject additional capital.

‘These discussions reflect a shared recognition of the importance of Rangers FC’s long-term direction, ambitions and management.’

With Celtic continuing to dominate the landscape in Scottish football, Rangers supporters are hopeful that the fresh faces in the boardroom can help turn around their side’s fortunes on the field.
