Stefano Domenicali will be confirmed as continuing in his role as Formula One’s chief executive for the next five years, Mail Sport can reveal.
The 59-year-old Italian is set to emerge from a game of musical chairs among American owner Liberty Media’s F1 executives not only still in his current position but apparently strengthened.
An announcement about the extension to his contract, which will run until the end of 2029, is expected within the next few hours, ahead of Friday’s practice sessions for the opening race of the season in Melbourne on Sunday.
The future of Domenicali, formerly team principal of Ferrari during their last world championship success in 2008, and then chief executive of Lamborghini, came under scrutiny last year as Liberty wrought tweaks to their F1 structure, eager to maximise their return on a £6billion investment, the value of which has soared three-fold in recent years.
Liberty Media’s seemingly all-powerful chief executive Greg Maffei moved out of F1 a few months ago as internal politics played out.
Chase Carey, who held Domenicali’s current position after Liberty took direct control from Bernie Ecclestone in 2017, has returned to the board but will not resume leadership of day-to-day matters, instead leaving that to his successor.
