  • City have landed young star Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri from Sheffield Wednesday
  • A move will be finalised this week with Man City paying £1.5m for the teenager

Manchester City have landed a teenage starlet from Sheffield Wednesday – but the stricken Championship club is unlikely to see any major financial benefit.

City will this week finalise a move for sought-after 15-year-old Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri in a deal thought to be worth £1.5m.

Mail Sport understands the first instalment is around £900,000 – a chunk of cash that could come as a considerable boost for Wednesday when they need it most.

Under the stewardship of deeply unpopular owner Dejphon Chansiri the South Yorkshire club has plunged into crisis and is again late with the payment of wages.

However, as with all transfers, the fee initially goes to the competition before being released to the selling club.

And, given the Owls are subject to a transfer embargo due to monies owed elsewhere, the EFL is expected to ensure that cash goes on settling those before heading to Hillsborough.

Last month, Wednesday were handed a three-window fee transfer restriction after exceeding 30 days of late payments between July 1 2024 and 30 June 2025.

The club notified the EFL of its intention to appeal the decision but were hit by a further embargo thanks to the emergence of outstanding payments owed to HMRC.

While the tax man will independently seek payment, football creditors are most likely to benefit from the sale of sought-after Cadamarteri, son of former Everton and Bradford City striker Danny, who scored 24 goals for the club’s Under 18s and finished as top marksman under the EFL’s Rule 47.

The move should have been a reason for those at Wednesday – and especially within its highly-rated academy – to celebrate. However, it would appear that they will see little benefit at a time when they need it the most.

Sheffield Wednesday and the EFL declined to comment as the crisis deepens. According to The Star, the city’s newspaper, some players have now handed in their notice thanks to the ongoing pay issues. Many received May’s salary late, while some did not receive any payment. No monies landed on Monday, the latest payday.

Chansiri has already been charged by the EFL in respect of the non-payment of player wages in March and May.

Meanwhile, talks are continuing with wantaway manager Danny Rohl, with the club in disarray less than six weeks before their season opener at Leicester City.

Chansiri says he is open to a sale of the sleeping giant, but only at a price which meets his valuation for a club he paid £37.5m for in 2015.
