Development on Top Gun: Maverick initially began in 2010, and Teller was cast in the project eight years later.

The performer will portray the son of late aviator Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw, who was the copilot of Cruise’s character in the first Top Gun movie, which premiered in 1986.

The 59-year-old performer returned to reprise his former role, and served as one of the project’s producers.

Other cast members include Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Monica Barbaro, as well as Val Kilmer, who returned to play Admiral Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky.

Principal production on the feature began in May of 2018 and continued until the following June, when Teller announced that he had finished filming his scenes.

Top Gun: Maverick was initially set to be released in 2019, although it was delayed due to production issues.

The onset of the global pandemic caused the movie’s debut date to get pushed back even further in April of 2020.

The movie’s date was reset on two further occasions before it was eventually given a premiere date of May 27, 2022.

Teller spoke about working on the long-awaited movie during an interview with Men’s Journal, where he noted that its production process was particularly intense.

‘Every shot, every stunt, was the result of the work, the real sweat, that we all put into it. The production was over the course of a full year, which was definitely the longest shoot I have ever been a part of,’ he recalled.

He then stated that the performers associated with the movie had all grown closer as a result of their involvement with the project.

‘I think the cast got close during that time, going through an experience like that really brings people together. Being there in a highly demanding environment, away from the usual distractions or comforts. It was a bonding experience,’ he said.

Teller noted that, although he was proud of his work on the movie, Sperry was particularly impressed by its storyline.

‘The movie just blew me away, and my wife said, “That might be the best film I have ever seen.” She was crying multiple times,’ he stated.

The performer went on to note that he expected moviegoers to be particularly impressed with Top Gun: Maverick.

‘There is a lot of heart in the story, and I can’t wait for people to see it. For fans of the original, I think they are going to be grinning from ear-to-ear the whole time. This is going to give them what they want,’ he said.
