England face a rematch of the World Cup final against Spain in Sunday’s European Championship showpiece, after their rivals beat Germany 1-0 after extra time in the semi-finals.

Spain and Germany were unable to be separated during the 90 minutes, with penalties looking likely to decide who would take on Sarina Wiegman’s side.

Reigning two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati would prove the difference between the sides.

Bonmati, who recovered from viral meningitis on the eve of the tournament, fired a low effort from a tight angle towards the German goal.

The Spaniard’s effort caught out Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger at her near post to give the reigning world champions the breakthrough.

After preserving their 1-0 advantage, Spain will look to secure their first Women’s European Championship title against defending champions England.

Victory would see Spain hold three major women’s international honours at the same time, having won both the World Cup and Nations League.

Spain narrowly beat England 1-0 in the 2023 World Cup final in Australia, where Olga Carmona’s goal proved the difference between the teams.

England, who are bidding for back-to-back European titles, were the last team to beat Spain back in February at Wembley.

Their last meeting, however, saw Spain earn a 2-1 win over Wiegman’s side in the Nations League semi-finals in June.

The European Championship final will take place in Basel on Sunday, with the match kicking off at 5pm.
