Emma Raducanu suffered a disappointing defeat in just 52 minutes against Amanda Anisimova on Sunday, crashing out at Indian Wells in the third round.

The British No 1 was well short of her best as she fell 6-1 6-1 to Anisimova, winning just 11 points in the first set and falling 3-0 behind in the second before managing to hold her serve.

Raducanu, seeded 25, admitted after the match that she needed to be more ‘aggressive’ against a competitor with the talent of world No 6 Anisimova, who was a runner-up at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

‘When I’m playing someone who’s at the top like that, I think they have an extra 10 miles an hour on their serve than me,’ Raducanu said.

‘If I’m not feeling it, that gap feels more evident in terms of weight of shot, in terms of power.

‘You just feel a little bit behind and your punches aren’t landing as much as theirs are.

‘I need to obviously be aggressive when playing those players, but I think there’s still a long way to go to be doing that and I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more.’

Raducanu, who repeatedly refused to chase down drop shots and may have been struggling from injury, added: ‘It’s difficult to read much into the game, other than the starting the point really, as there were no rallies.

‘But I have to look at what I achieved in the last nine days of practice since I arrived here, and the first match was a good one for me. Today I could let it get me down if I wanted to, but overall I think the days have been better than not.’

The 23-year-old has been working temporarily with her old ally Mark Petchey as she continues to search for a 10th coach of her career after splitting with Francis Roig in January.

After being announced as a global brand ambassador for Uniqlo at the end of February, Raducanu confirmed that hiring a new coach was not an immediate priority.

Meanwhile, victorious Anisimova said during an on-court interview after the match: ‘I think I can be very pleased with my performance today.

‘I had a tough first round so just went out to be fearless. I wanted to enjoy it and wanted to keep the run going.’
