The driver of a car that crashed over a roundabout and landed on the tracks of a railway line is still in hospital, police have said.
The crash in Salford at 02:00 GMT on Friday caused “significant damage” to the railway and overhead electric cables, closing both the main line between Liverpool and Manchester, and the Chat Moss line.
The driver of the BMW, who is in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken to hospital.
His injuries are believed to be serious but not life-threatening or life-changing, Greater Manchester Police said.
Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services were all affected as a result of the line being blocked between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly.
The incident caused disruption to football fans heading to Old Trafford on Friday for Manchester United’s FA Cup tie with Leicester City.
Rail services returned to normal on Saturday.
