Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai says no new progress has been made over signing a new contract — but the Hungarian insists he loves the club and is keen to commit his long-term future to them.

The 25-year-old is maturing as a leader and has been one of the standout performers for the Premier League champions this season.

It has prompted the club to open talks over extending his deal, three years on from his arrival from RB Leipzig.

Asked if there had been any progress, Szoboszlai told reporters: ‘Nothing yet, to be honest. Nothing. From now on… it is not in my hands.

‘There is no progression but if the right offer comes then let’s see.

‘We will see. It is always there and back and there. Let’s see what happens, hopefully everyone will be happy at the end.

‘I like the city, I like the club, I like playing with these guys, I love Anfield, I love the fans, let’s see what the future holds.’

Pushed on whether an agreement is close, he added: ‘It is not on me. I would love to. We will see.’

Liverpool are also in direct conversations with midfielder Ryan Gravenberch’s agency about a new deal, while solving Alexis Mac Allister’s long-term future is also on their to-do list.

Szoboszlai is keen to be a future captain at Liverpool and his stellar performances this year have only strengthened his case.

Asked about his leadership, the Hungary skipper said: ‘Of course, we have a few leaders in the team with the older guys, they are longer here than a couple of us, and I try to do my job on the pitch, try to help the team and help the new guys and everyone and if I need to step up as a leader then I will.

‘I am the type of guy who it is never enough for me, I can always be better and better, so there is no limit up there. I would like to get as many goals as I can, as many assists and win as many trophies as possible. That’s my plan. That’s how I grew up and that’s how I want to keep going.’
