You must tell HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) by Sunday 5 October 2025, if you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the 2024-25 tax year and you have not sent one before. The 2024-25 tax year started on 6 April 2024 and ended on 5 April 2025.
If you register for Self Assessment for the first time after Sunday 5 October 2025, you may have to pay a penalty.
Who may need to register for Self Assessment?
You might need to register for Self Assessment for the first time if you
- have earned more than £1,000 through a side hustle
- are self-employed
- rent out a property
If you’ve registered before
If you’ve registered for Self Assessment before but did not send a tax return last year, you must register again to reactivate your account.
