Texas A&M Aggies were dealt a major blow ahead of the college football season after senior linebacker Daymion Sanford had to be carted off due to an injury on Saturday.

The incident occurred during the Aggies’ Maroon and White spring game, where Sanford appeared to pick up a significant left leg injury during the action.

The linebacker, who was recently named as one of the team’s captains, appeared to sustain the injury after making a tackle, before swiftly receiving medical attention.

A cast was quickly placed on his leg before he was loaded onto a cart and driven off the field at the Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko later provided a concerning update on the 21-year-old, telling media: ‘He got injured, lower body and we’ll figure it out.’

It comes as a crushing blow for the Aggies ahead of the new season, given Sanford was the fourth-leading tackler on the Texas A&M squad last season.

The linebacker went from starting just three games in the season prior, to becoming a regular starter for the team en route to their first College Football Playoff appearance.

Overall, he finished last season with 57 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles and one interception.

After Saturday’s spring game, sophomore linebacker Noah Mikhail admitted that Sanford’s injury could pose a real issue for Texas A&M’s season ahead.

‘Daymion is a one-of-a-kind type of player,’ Mikhail said, as per TexAgs.

‘Losing someone like that is really tough on the whole team, especially as linebackers. We went and prayed in the huddle.

‘We are hoping we can get him back as soon as possible,’ he added.

Last year, Texas A&M fell just short of the SEC title game before suffering a season-ending defeat to Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoffs.
