This Morning’s Alison Hammond was forced to attempt to diffuse a ‘tense’ row between presenter Dermot O’Leary and guest Gyles Brandreth, after an exchange which left O’Leary visibly annoyed.

The presenters had both played their favourite songs in honour of the International Day of Happiness on Friday (20 March), with Dermot choosing A Hero’s Death by Irish rock band Fontaines D.C.

While Gyles enjoyed Hammond’s pop-R&B offering, he made it clear he was less than enamoured with O’Leary’s effort.

“It was a grim song,” ruled Brandreth. “ We’ve moved down to 19th place in the world happiness rankings. Why? Because of people like you saying that unhappy songs like that make you happy.”

“ I somehow don’t think the reason why we’re unhappy is because I played that song, Gyles,” Dermot shot back. “I think there might be other, socioeconomic, issues.”
