Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan believes Danny Rohl would be a roaring success if he is appointed as the new Rangers manager.

Rohl is the frontrunner to take the job at Ibrox after Steven Gerrard dramatically pulled out of talks over the weekend.

Sources at Rangers have stressed that the club are continuing to assess their options, but Rohl is understood to have impressed during talks late last week.

Kevin Muscat is another name on the radar but his situation in China, where he currently manages Shanghai Port, is understood to be a complicating factor in any proposed deal.

Rohl is available after leaving Sheffield Wednesday in the summer and the 36-year-old German is now the favourite to take over from the sacked Russell Martin.

Bannan captained Rohl’s Owls side during their time together in the English Championship and insists his former boss would soon turn thing around at Ibrox.

‘Danny was really good, he had a winning mindset from his first meeting,’ said former Scotland midfielder Bannan.

‘He was a young manager so the boys were intrigued to see how he would go about it, but we all left that meeting knowing we had a top, top manager on our hands.

‘He was only young but he came across as highly confident. He is very passionate. He took to Sheffield Wednesday and the fans took to him right away because of the passion he showed.

‘I know he is up for a battle — he came to us when we were rock bottom and looked likely to be relegated but we stayed up that year and kicked on.

‘A lot of people seem to forget he worked at a massive club in Bayern Munich. I know he was assistant there but he would have got a taste of something similar to the Old Firm teams, because it’s all about winning games.

‘Knowing the manager’s character and looking at that Rangers team, there’d be an upturn in results if Danny did get the job.

‘I’ll put my neck out on the line and say he is the best manager I have worked under. He is brilliant.’

The bulk of the Rangers squad will report back today following the international break, with coach Steven Smith taking first-team training.

As things stand, Rangers are still confident of having a new head coach in place by the time they face Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday.
