Leicester City target Danny Rohl has told senior players at Sheffield Wednesday he’s leaving the club after nearly two years in charge.
Rohl hadn’t returned to pre-season training at Hillsborough and effectively confirmed his exit in a ring-round of key figures in the dressing-room.
The Foxes, who parted company with Ruud van Nistelrooy on Friday, have held talks with Wednesday over a compensation package for 36-year-old Rohl who is also of interest to Brentford as assistant to Keith Andrews.
Though Rohl has been widely praised for stabilising Wednesday under the chaotic ownership of Delphon Chansiri and helped the club finish 12th in The Championship last season, he was questioned by players about why he’d not organised anything for the forthcoming campaign to which the German insisted he’d done his best.
Rohl’s future away from Wednesday has seemed certain since the end of last season, in which he secured a mid-table finish having initially saved the club from relegation after his appointment in the 2023-24 campaign. A barrier to his suitors is the significant compensation that would be owed to Wednesday, whose contract with Rohl runs until 2027.

Sources have indicated for a while that when Rohl left managerial responsibilities would quickly be passed to Pedersen, 47, the highly-rated Dane who was appointed Rohl’s No 2 in 2023 and was previously prominent under Red Bull’s footballing umbrella.
Speaking in May, the 36-year-old said: ‘Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to work at the highest possible level with the best players in the near future.
‘The Bundesliga is, of course, a consideration. My situation in Sheffield is unofficially relatively clear. There’s a clear agreement with the owner about how I envision my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail about that right now.’
Sheffield Wednesday are currently struggling financially and their owner Dejphon Chansiri continues to face calls to sell the club.
It is understood that new Brentford boss Andrews is also keen on adding Pedersen to his coaching staff.
