Channel Nine star Danika Mason has received some brilliant news about her love life with the announcement that her footy star boyfriend Liam Knight is coming to live back in Australia.
Knight has been living in England since he started playing for Hull in the Super League early last year, but the club has just revealed he is no longer on their books.
‘Hull FC can confirm that Liam Knight has been released with immediate effect,’ the team announced on Sunday, Australian time.
‘The club has mutually agreed to release the player from the remainder of his contract to return to Australia on compassionate grounds.’
That will be music to Mason’s ears after she and Knight were forced to conduct a long-distance romance for the majority of their relationship, which became public in July 2024.
Knight, 31, can expect to be snapped up by an NRL club now that he is a free agent.

Knight (pictured) had been playing footy in England since early 2025, but he has now parted ways with Hull FC
The powerful forward’s last stint in the NRL saw him play just seven matches for the Bulldogs as he was badly hampered by injury, but he proved he is a valuable first-grader as he racked up 66 matches with Souths from 2019 to 2023.
Knight’s return Down Under comes as Mason moves on from the drinking drama that made headlines around the world as she covered the Winter Olympics for Today last month.
The Nine star slurred and stumbled her way through a live cross from Italy, sparking uproar on social media.
Today hosts Karl Stefanovic and Jayne Azzopardi suggested the cold weather made it difficult for her to speak, but Mason won praise when she admitted she’d been drinking in an on-air apology.
‘Guys, just before we do go, I just want to take a moment if that’s okay, just to apologise,’ she began.
‘I also wanted to say thank you for everyone who has reached out. I’m okay. Probably just a little bit embarrassed.
‘Look, I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn’t have had a drink. And especially in these conditions, it’s cold. We’ve got altitude. And not having had dinner probably didn’t help as well.
‘But I want to take full responsibility. It’s not the standard that I set for myself.
Knight (pictured with Mason) should attract plenty of interest from NRL clubs
The development comes hot on the heels of Mason’s headline-grabbing appearance on Today while covering the Winter Olympics. She later admitted she’d had too much to drink before doing a live cross (pictured) from Italy
‘So in saying that, I am genuinely sorry.’
Mason went on to thank those who reached out, while Stefanovic – who famously made a drunken appearance on the program the morning after the 2009 Logies – praised his colleague for her hard work.
‘I don’t even know what you’re talking about,’ he said.
‘You’re the best, Danika. Don’t worry about it. Let’s move on.’
Mason and Knight got engaged in October last year during a picturesque European holiday.
He popped the question on a beach in Sardinia, Italy, with a dazzling diamond ring.
Mason later revealed the shock measures Liam took to hide the ring and keep the engagement a secret.
‘He was trying to hide the ring from me, and we needed to go to the beach, and we hired a little dinghy for the day,’ she said on Today.
‘Anyway, so he had to drop me off and, to keep the secret, he had to go swim 150 metres.’
She added: ‘So his heart rate was already through the roof and then he had to do the proposal on top of that.’
The pair went public with their romance just months after the Nine sports presenter ditched her ex-fiancé Todd Liubinskas.
The loved-up couple finally confirmed their relationship via social media after months of speculation, with the footballer embracing Danika in a photo shared to his Instagram page.
‘My life’s good,’ Liam wrote in the caption, alongside the couple sharing a cuddle.
