  • Hojlund has scored just three goals in 28 Premier League matches this season
  • The Red Devils have been linked with moves for several strikers in the summer

Daniel Sturridge has urged goal-shy Rasmus Hojlund to be more selfish in order to recover from his slump at Manchester United.

The Norwegian has endured a miserable campaign at Old Traffords, scoring only three times in 28 appearances in his second season since a £72million transfer from Atalanta.

Hojlund has not been aided by the woeful form of the Red Devils, who sit 14th in the table and on are course to record their worst-ever Premier League campaign.

Sturridge, who enjoyed spells in the top flight with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, believes that the 22-year-old must do more to have more attempts in goal. And he urged the striker to be more selfish to improve his form.

‘Centre-back have had more shots,’ said Sturridge on Sky Sports. ‘I have had periods where I have had one shot coming off the pitch and it is down to me, my run selection.

‘It is also communicating with team-mates this is what I want from you. The one thing he has to improve on for me is being a little bit more selfish, you have to pick your spots.

‘There’s something in there, he is not a bad player, he has talent and maybe the setup he is in now isn’t allowing him to flourish.’

Hojlund’s run has worried pundits and led to speculation that the Red Devils will seek to move on from him in the summer. After his poor showing in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by Wolves, when he was substituted after 70 minutes, Premier League legend Alan Shearer branded Hojlund a ‘damaged player’ and said he believes he is suffering from a ‘crisis of confidence’.

Despite his shortcomings this term, Hojlund has retained his place as United’s first-choice striker for the majority of the campaign under Ruben Amorim ahead of Joshua Zirkzee and teenage wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin.

But the club are reported to be in the market for a striker during the upcoming window. In recent weeks, Wolves star Matheus Cunha has emerged as a likely summer recruit.

Mail Sport revealed last week that Man United are edging closer to an agreement with the Brazilian.

United will still need to activate the Brazilian’s £62.5million release clause but are hopeful of having terms in place by next month while they still have headroom under Profit and Sustainability Rules.
