Cristiano Ronaldo’s excruciating wait for a major trophy with Al-Nassr extended on Saturday, after suffering a penalty shootout defeat by Al-Ahli in the Saudi Super Cup final.

Ronaldo’s opener arrived from the spot late in the first half, before Franck Kessie equalised for Al-Ahli in first-half stoppage time.

The goal marked Ronaldo’s 100th for the Riyadh club, making him the first player ever to score 100 or more goals for four different clubs.

It also took him up to 939 career goals, now 61 away from the elusive 1000 that the Portuguese star is chasing.

In his previous spells around Europe, he netted 450 for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, and 101 for Juventus.

Al-Nassr took a 2-1 lead but threw it away late on, and eventually lost 5-3 on penalties.

This decider was the headline act of a week-long Saudi Super Cup takeover in Hong Kong.

Al-Nassr squeezed past Al-Ittihad 2-1 in Tuesday’s semi-final under the lights, while Al-Ahli thrashed Al-Qadsiah 5-1 a day later to book their place.

Ronaldo, 40, won the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup but this sits outside FIFA’s recognised ledger.

Al-Nassr kick off their Saudi Pro League campaign on August 29 against Al-Taawoun.
