Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. Footballing legends, Portugal heroes, and Manchester United icons.

They crossed paths for a brief period when Ronaldo made his return to the Red Devils in 2021, before his nasty fall-out with the club resulted in his departure at the end of 2022.

That spell saw the two stars play together 51 times – while they can add another 67 appearances together for the national team. Fernandes remains at Old Trafford – as captain – while Ronaldo is still living it large in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.

And while Ronaldo is by far the bigger name – one of global phenomenon as more than just a footballer – Fernandes is now equal. Equal in terms of on-field success at United by the way of goal contributions.

His assist for Benjamin Sesko against Everton on Monday night saw Fernandes clock his 140th goal or assist or the club in the Premier League, which is the same as Ronaldo. And, perhaps surprisingly, he did it in 10 fewer games, and will now almost certainly fly past his international colleague.

But who is the bigger United legend? How do the two careers – albeit of difference lengths – compare? Daily Mail Sport takes a closer look.

The numbers

Ronaldo’s career has been built on his serial goal scoring exploits, and he is chasing 1,000 career goals at the age of 41.

Starting out his career as a right midfielder, he developed into a striker and hasn’t looked back since.

The only player to score 100 goals with four different clubs, the man known as ‘CR7’ is now on 969 goals, with it expected he will reach the illustrious 1,000 at some point next season, if all goes to plan.

He netted an impressive 450 in 438 appearances for Real Madrid, which is where he played the best football of his career. His two spells in England reaped 145 strikes, while a short stay at Juventus saw him bag 101 times.

Add those numbers to the 125 at Al-Nassr, five for Sporting Lisbon and the staggering 143 he has scored for Portugal – the highest international goal scorer of all time – and you get the 969 he is currently on. As a ratio, it’s 0.74 goals a game.

When it comes to Fernandes, goal scoring isn’t the game. And, although he is 10 years younger, he can’t – and won’t – get near to half of Ronaldo’s numbers.

The United No 8 has notched 217 career goals to date, with 106 of them coming for his current club. Sixty-three came for Sporting, 11 for Udinese, five for Sampdoria and four for Novara, while he has scored 28 for his national side.

That equals 0.3 goals a game. Assists, however, are his bread and butter.

Fernandes has picked up 202 career assists so far, including 106 for United and 50 for Sporting. That’s 0.28 a game. Ronaldo has 307 in total, including 131 for Real Madrid and 50 for United, but that’s 0.23 a game.

The trophies

Fernandes’ trophy haul isn’t huge. He’s been with United since 2020, and his six years at Old Trafford have coincided with some of the toughest times in the club’s history.

Still, he has managed to muster up one FA Cup and one League Cup title, as well as the Player of the Year award in the 19/20 season.

But then you have Ronaldo. Ten years at Real Madrid will paint a very different picture.

He’s a five-time Champions League winner – one with United, and four with Madrid. A two-time Spanish champion; a two-time Italian champion; a two-time Super Cup winner; a four-time Club World Cup winner. He’s won two Spanish Cups, one Italian Cup and one FA Cup.

Also a three-time English champion, his personal accolades are countless. They are topped, though, by five Ballon d’Or titles. Quite a stark difference.

The net worths

Ronaldo is one of the richest people on planet earth, let alone in terms of footballers. In 2025, he became the first footballer billionaire, and is thought to have a net worth of around £1.04billion.

That money has come from his astronomical salary – he is thought to be on around £488,000-a-day at Al-Nassr – sponsorships, and other endorsements. The bottom line is he is a mega star and a money-making machine.

Other ventures include a lifetime deal with Nike, as well as work with the likes of Altice, Herbalife, DAZN.

He has his own business empire, too. The CR7 brand has seen him open hotels, fitness centres, fragrances and underwear – and it’s unlikely he is done yet as he surely nears retirement.

Fernandes, meanwhile, lives a more football-focused life. He is thought to be on around £280,000-a-week at United, having rejected the chance to join Ronaldo in Saudi on £700,000-a-week at Al-Hilal.

His sponsors also include Nike, while he has also worked with companies such as Gillette and DHL. That brings his net worth to a total of around £78m – a smidge on Ronaldo’s numbers.

The international stage

Due to his longevity and relentless goal scoring, Ronaldo finds himself a multiple record-holder with the Portugal national team – but also in international football as a whole.

He has made the most international appearances of any player, logging 226 to date – a number that will only increase with the World Cup on the horizon. Bader Al-Mutawa of Kuwait is in second with 202, and a certain Lionel Messi is third with 198 – soon to go second.

The forward also holds the record for the most international goals, with 143. Again, his old rival Messi is behind in second with 116 to his name, having made his debut for Argentina two years later.

Other records include the most appearances at a European Championship with 25, the most goals in the same competition with 14, and becoming the first player to 100 competitive international goals.

In terms of honours, he’s picked up a European Championship with Portugal, which they won in 2016, and two Nations League titles. You feel that this summer will surely be his last shot at adding the World Cup to that collection.

Fernandes has 28 goals and 26 assists to his name with Portugal from 87 appearances, with the 31-year-old likely to hit 100 next season.

He too was part of the squads that won the Nations League in 2019 and 2025, but wasn’t quite about during the Euros success. Still, ironically, he could end his career with more international accolades than his team-mate due to how many more years he may have in the tank.

The personal lives

Off the field, Ronaldo is engaged to long-term partner Georgina Rodriguez, who he started dating in 2016. The couple met at a Gucci retail store in Madrid, and haven’t looked back.

She is known as a social media personality, model, and an entrepreneur, and shares two children with her superstar husband. Alana Martina, eight, was their first, and Bella Esmeralda, four, is their other child together.

Ronaldo has another three children. His oldest, Cristiano Jr, is 15 and has followed his father’s footballing career. Having spent time in the academies of the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United, he is now at Al-Nassr, and seemingly close to being called up to the first team. The identity of his mother has never been disclosed.

Eva Maria and Mateo Ronaldo, both eight, meanwhile, were born via surrogacy in the United States. It is understood Rodriguez acts as a mother to all five of the children.

They currently reside in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Ronaldo and Ronaldo Jr play for Al-Nassr. It is widely reported that they live in the Al Muhammadiyah district, which is known for its high-end villas.

The family also have homes in Portugal, Spain and Madeira, and own a luxurious Bombardier Global Express XRS private jet to fly between them.

When it comes to cars, Ronaldo has plenty. His collection includes a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a Ferrari F12 TDF and a Lamborghini Aventador.

Fernandes has been married Ana Pinho since 2015. The couple have been together since the midfielder was 17, and they share two children together: a daughter named Matilde, born in 2017, and a son called Goncalo, born in 2020.

They live in Manchester, with Fernandes often speaking of how his family are settled in the City. This year he said: ‘I feel at home at Manchester. My kids feel at home here. It’s wonderful to be in a place where my kids can enjoy so much.’

His car collection is said to include a £150,000 Porsche Panamera Turbo S, and £85,000 BMW X5 M50i, and a £64,000 Audi Q7.

Fernandes can’t match Ronaldo in many departments, and likely never will. But, when it comes to Manchester United legacy, he could well topple his countryman by the time his Old Trafford stay comes to an end.
