Persistent rain prevented any play on the second day of the County Championship match between Lancashire and Worcestershire at Southport.

The covers were on the square at Trafalgar Road well before the scheduled start of play at 11:00 BST and nothing that happened over the next few hours encouraged the groundstaff to consider removing them.

An early lunch was taken at 12:30 and it was no surprise at all when umpires Jack Shantry and Chris Watts abandoned play at 14:35.

Play is scheduled to resume at 11:00 on Sunday when the teams will look to make progress towards ending their current dismal runs of form.

Both sides arrived at Southport on Friday morning having lost their last two games. Lancashire are currently fourth in Division Two, 28 points behind leaders Durham, and Worcestershire are three points worse off.
