A concerning update has emerged on women’s soccer star Savy King after her on-field collapse during an NWSL on Friday night, as the 20-year-old underwent heart surgery on Tuesday.

King collapsed during the second half of last week’s game in Los Angeles, with medical professionals getting to her side immediately. The defender was worked on for about 10 minutes before she was carted off the field and transported to a local hospital.

After a lone update of King being ‘responsive and ‘under going further evaluation’ on Saturday morning, more of her status is known in another statement from Angel City FC and her family.

‘Savy King was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday morning after receiving immediate care at California Hospital Medical Center following a medical incident during Friday’s Angel City FC match,’ a team statement read.

‘After a thorough evaluation, doctors discovered a heart abnormality and Savy underwent successful surgery today to address it. She is now resting and recovering surrounded by her family and her prognosis is excellent.’

‘We are incredibly thankful for the outstanding medical care she has received and the overwhelming support from our community. We kindly ask for continued respect for Savy’s privacy as she focuses on healing.’

The match against the Utah Royals did continue after King’s collapse, with both teams gathering for a post-match prayer. Alex Loera, who was teammates with King at Bay FC last season, led the group.

‘On behalf of our entire family, along with Savy, we have been so moved by the love and support from Angel City players, staff, fans, and community, as well as soccer fans across the country,’ a statement from the King family read.

‘We are blessed to share Savy is recovering well and we are looking forward to having her home with us soon. We want to thank the incredible Angel City medical staff and players who acted swiftly as well as the medical teams that have given her such exceptional care.’

‘We will never forget the kindness and care you’ve shown, our gratitude is endless. In moments like these, we’re reminded of God’s constant presence and protection. Thank you all for lifting Savy up in your prayers.’

King has been on the radar of US women’s national team coach Emma Hayes this year, being called into January’s futures camp and as a training player before the SheBelieves Cup.

Royals head coach Jimmy Coenraets said after the match he was unsure it should have continued after King’s incident.

‘I think that’s not the right situation or position to be in,’ Coenraets said. ‘I think it was a really tough moment and the same after the game. What do you want to focus on after the game?

‘I think at that point, yes, there is a result, there is a game, but I just want to make sure people feel safe, healthy, good and they can actually move on. I think that was also the focus after the game for us.’
