A commuter had a miraculous escape after he was almost pushed under an approaching train in Seattle, authorities have said.

Surveillance footage shows an individual waiting on the platform at Northgate Station on 19 March. According to police investigators, a stranger, Elisio Melendez, 26, tried to shove him in front of a moving train.

The victim managed to keep his balance and avoided falling, though the suspect then pushed him for a second time before fleeing the scene.

King County Sheriff’s Office were able to track Melendez at a mental health facility where he lives.

He has been charged with attempted murder in the Second Degree. As of 27 March, the defendant remained in custody.

Melendez was committed to a psychiatric facility in 2021 after being found not competent to stand trial for stabbing his sister. He was released in 2022.
