Junior college football star Marcus Dickey passed away on Sunday at age 22 in a tragic car crash, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College announced.

Dickey had just made the switch to the junior-college ranks from Division-I Nicholls State this offseason and was traveling to campus when the accident occurred. No other details have been made public about the accident.

Dickey played defensive line at the FCS-level school, appearing for the Colonels in 2023.

‘He was doing good. He was the kind of kid who was the first one in the meeting, one of the first guys out at practice, and one of the hardest workers in the weight room,’ MGCCC head coach Jack Wright said via news release.

‘He always had a big ol’ smile on his face. He was everything you would want out of a teammate. Everything.’

‘He was a very positive young man in every regard. We’re very, very said as coaches and players. We’re going to play and honor him this week and the rest of the year.’

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College plays in the MACCC, the junior-college league featured on Netflix’s ‘Last Chance U’ through the lens of East Mississippi Community College during the first two seasons of the show.

EMCC and MGCCC play to open the season on Thursday.

‘We are heartbroken by the passing of Marcus Dickey,’ MGCCC President Dr. Mary S. Graham said via news release. ‘Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, teammates, and coaches, during this very difficult time.’

‘At Gulf Coast, our athletics program is like a family, and we will stand together to support one another through this tragedy.’

Dickey played prep football at Biloxi High School, earning first-team all-state honors during his senior season in 2020.
