Providence College basketball player Duncan Powell was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged with domestic violence disorderly conduct.

A police report published by local news shows that Powell, 23, allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend, her friends and then himself.

Cranston Police attended a location at Plainfield Pike just after 1am on Sunday after a woman reported her friend’s ex-boyfriend was outside her home with a gun.

However, when they arrived, there was nobody outside and Powell, a 6ft 8ins forward from Dallas, had left.

The friend told police that, while Powell’s ex was there earlier in the evening, she was being bombarded with calls from him because he wanted to know where she was.

The ex-girlfriend then chose to leave the friend’s house amid fears Powell was going to harm both her and her friends.

Once she had departed, Powell arrived at the house and another witness told police he saw something sticking out of his sweatshirt pocket. Powell was allegedly at the door for around four minutes before leaving.

Officers asked the ex-girlfriend to return to the scene to speak with them. She is said to have told officers that Powell struck her earlier on Saturday, while they were at his apartment, and showed them a bruise on her leg.

She also told police she had discovered a tracking device on the bottom of her car while getting an oil change and Powell was constantly trying to find out where she was.

The police report notes that while they were speaking with the ex-girlfriend, Powell was continuously trying to call her. An officer picked up the phone to speak with him and urged him to return to the scene to speak with them.

The officer believed Powell was walking while on the phone and then spotted him coming towards him with his hand inside his sweatshirt. As a result, officers drew their guns and arrested Powell at gunpoint amid fears for their safety.

However, a search showed Powell was not armed and his car, a black Cadillac, was parked just around the block from the apartment.

Powell, who is due to be arraigned on Monday morning, played 22 games and made five starts for the Providence Friars last season. He averaged 4.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.

He previously played for North Carolina A&T, Sacramento State and Georgia Tech in his college basketball career.
