The Mining Remediation Authority is designing a permanent safety solution for a ground collapse in Holme Wood, Bradford, after investigations confirmed it was linked to historical coal mining.

The incident was first reported to us in early May and the area was fenced off while we investigated. Within four weeks of being notified, we had carried out detailed ground investigations alongside Bradford Council, confirmed our responsibility for the collapse, and begun remediation works. Stone infilling of the shaft was completed on Wednesday 4 June, just one month after the incident was first reported to us.

The collapse was caused by an old recorded mine shaft – a legacy of the area’s coal mining history. Ground collapses of this kind occur when disused underground mine workings fail, causing the surface above to drop and open up. The shaft has now been filled with large stone as a temporary measure to remove any immediate danger and stabilise the collapse, while our engineers design a permanent solution.

Mining Remediation Authority project manager Malcolm Scott said “We can confirm that the ground collapse near Copgrove Road, Bradford, is coal-mining related and we are pleased to have completed the stone infilling works so swiftly. Further drilling and soil sampling will take place over the coming weeks so that our engineers can design a permanent solution for the site.

“We would like to reassure local residents that safety is our priority throughout this process. There are a number of recorded historical mine shafts in the area, which are inspected regularly by our mine entry inspection team. Where no signs of disturbance or hazard are present, intrusive works are avoided, as unnecessary intervention can itself cause disruption. A final inspection of the area will be carried out on completion of the permanent remediation works.”

Anyone who spots a suspected coal mining related hazard can report it at any time by calling our 24/7 emergency line on 0800 288 4242.
